Charity
The word "charity" came to English language through the Old French word "charité" which was taken from the Latin word "caritas" which means preciousness, dearness, and high price. Charity actually means the voluntary giving of help to those people who are in need and not related to the giver, it also means to make someone’s life a little better by giving them something without any expectation.
From the ancient time there is the concept of charity in many religious books and many saints too had spoken about it. The people, those who are earning more than enough money should give something to the poor;those who are in desperate need; it’s not necessary that a giver have to give money only, giving food or clothing are also considered as charity. In modern era charity has got altogether a different aspect. Now we can either donate one man one thing at a time or we can donate something to a charitable organization, now what is this charitable organization? A charitable organization is a type of non-profit organization which differs from other types of NPOs whose goals are centered on philanthropic issues; many charitable organizations also look after human rights and public interests. But the legal definition of charity and charitable organization varies from one country to another according to their law.
In Australia limitations on charities being involved in political campaigning, which many charities saw as an unwelcome departure from the case law. Charities in Australia are needed to register under the State jurisdiction within which they intend to raise money publicly. According to the Canada Revenue Agency charities in Canada must be registered under the Charities Directorate of the Canada Revenue Agency. In England according to Section 1 Charities Act 2006, the word “charity” means an institution which is established totally for charitable purposes only and falls to be matter to the control of the High Court in the exercise of its jurisdiction with respect to charities. In the U.S.A, a charitable organization is that organization which is organized and operated for purposes that are beneficial to the public interest, though a distinction is there between types of charitable organizations.
